Side - When one side of a wager wins and the other side ties.

Square - Player that is always on favorites and overs. Also known as a gambling fool.

Steam - When a betting line starts to move quite rapidly, usually cause by too many bettors betting on it.

Straight Bet - One wager

Sucker Bet - Parlays, teasers or exotics (anything bookmakers use to entice squares to bet more)

Taking – taking the odds, betting on the underdog.

Teaser - A bet on two or more teams where the bettor can add or subtract points from the spread to make their bets stronger in return for reduced odds. All results must match the selections to win the teaser.

Thick'un - A big bet.

Totals - Total combined point/runs/goals scored in a game.

Trebles - A triple bet on three events. A form of parlay or accumulator.

Underdog - The team that receives a point start in a handicap. The weaker team and least likely to win the match/event.

Underlay - A situation in which the odds on a game favor the house rather than bettors

Value - Getting the best odds on a betting proposition; the highest possible edge.


Vigorish or Vig - The commission paid to the bookmaker.

W



Wise Guy - A knowledgeable handicapper or bettor.

Outsiders – Non favorites and are not expected to win. Usually offered at lengthy odds.

Over/Under - A bet on whether the total points or goals scored by the two teams will be over or under a specified number.

Overplay - An advantage for the bettor in which the price on a given wager is greater than the real probability of its success.

P



Parlay - A multiple bet. Making simultaneous selections on two or more games with the intent of pressing the winnings of the first win on the bet of the following game selected, and so on. Selection must all win for the bettor to win.

Past Post - To place a wager after an event has started

PK or Pick - Evenly matched teams or a game with no favourite.

Pointspread -The online betting line or handicap.

Price – Odds.

Proposition Bet - A wager on a particular aspect of the game such as how many field goals will be made.

Puppy-Underdog

Push-Tie on wager. If the result of a game lands exactly on the pointspread or if the exact score of the game matches exactly the sportsbook's posted game total.

Punter - Bettor.

Return - Your total winnings on a bet.

Round Robin - A single ticket comprised of more than one parlay. A bet consisting of 10 bets involving three selections in different events.

Getting down - Placing a bet on a game or sports event.

Handicap - A system used by bookmakers to make a one sided event become a more attractive betting proposition to the punter. Example of a handicap is giving the underdog or weaker team a goal advantage to balance the game.

Handicapper - A person who studies factors such as statistics, injuries, weather and news to predict the outcome.

Handle - Total amount of money wagered.

Hedge - To reduce losses or guarantee winnings by placing bets on opposing outcome to the punter’s original selected outcome

Heinz - A Heinz is a multiple bet consisting of 57 bets involving 6 selections in different events. The
multiple bet breakdown is 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15x4-folds, 6x5-folds and one 6-fold.

Hold -the percentage of the house wins

Home Field Advantage – The edge the home team have over their opponents as a result of familiarity with the playing area, favourable demographics and effect of travel on the visiting team.

Hook A half - point.

Joint Favourites - When a sports book or bookmaker cannot split two teams for favouritism, they may both be joint favourites.

Jolly - Bookmakers slang for “Favourite”.

Juice (also called Vigorish or Vig) - A bookmaker's commission.

Lay a Bet - A bookie accepting a bet.

Lay a Price – To bet.

Layer – Also means bookie.

Layoff - A wager made by one bookmaker with another to help equalize the excess action he accepted from customers and reduce his risk on one side.

Limit - Maximum bet accepted by the house before the price will be changed.

Line – The odds that are offered to the punters

Lock (or Banker) - term for an almost certain winner.

Long Odds - Generally greater than 10:1.

Longshot - A team or player that is considered to be a huge underdog and not likely to win at all.

Lucky 15 - A Lucky 15 consists of 15 bets involving 4 selections in different events, i.e. 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles, and 1 fourfold. As a consolation if you only have one winner it will be paid at double the odds. If you get all four winners, a 10% bonus will be added to your returns.

M



Margin - The amount a competitor in an event finishes compared to its competitor.

Middle -To win both sides of a game. For example, if you bet the underdog +3 1/2 and the favorite - 2 1/2 and the favorite wins by 3, you've MIDDLED the book.

Money Line - (Action Line or Spread Betting) The amount that must be wagered to win $100, or the amount won for a $100 wager.

The poker community has their own poker slang, casino has their own casino terms and the sports betting world have their own punter language. In order to have a clear understanding about sports betting, you must learn your way through the punter lingo.

If you wish to engage in sports betting it would be best if you know the commonly used punter slang lingo to have a better understanding towards the act. So here’s the first list of words sports bettors usually used in their community. A-F only, next set of list will follow.

A



ACTION - A bet or wager of any kind is deemed Action if valid.

ALL-IN - With all-in betting there are no refunds given for scratched or withdrawn competitors or teams in an event where a bet is placed. Should an event be cancelled then the amount bet will be refunded.

ARBITRAGE- Where a variation in odds available allows a punter to back both sides and guarantee a win.

B



BACKED - A 'backed' team is one on which lots of bets have been placed.

BAD BEAT - Sure winner turned to a loser

BANKROLL or BR - Your gambling money

BEEF - A dispute over the outcome of a bet

BETTOR - Someone who places or has a bet. Referred to as “Punter” in the UK.

BM or BOOKMAKER - Person or site who is licensed to accept bets on the result of an event based on their provision of odds to the customer. Called sportsbook in the US.

BOOKIE (UK) – Short for bookmaker. The person, shop or site that accepts and handles your bets.

BONUS - Addition to your deposit.

COMBINATION BET - Selecting any number of teams/horses to finish first and second in either order

CORRELATED PARLAY - Correlation is the degree to which the results of two bets are related. An example of two bets that are correlated is Barca to lead at the half and Barca to win the game. A correlated parlay is essentially a bet that is tied into another positively, in that if one bets wins, it increases the odds of the other bet winning. A more blatant example would be parlaying the first half over to the second half over to the game over. If you win the first half over wager and the second half over bet, you're obviously going to win the wager for the game.

DIME - $1000

DOLLAR - $100

DOUBLE OR NOTHING - An even-money bet, a bet that pays off exactly the amount wagered.

DRAW - Where competitors in an event finish evenly. Where there is a draw and this is not offered as a betting option, the return will be divided by the number of joint winners.

EDGE-Advantage

EVEN MONEY - A 1:1 odds bet. A $1 stake would return $2 dividend ($1 win plus $1 staked).

EXPOSURE - The amount of money one actually stands to lose on a game or race.

F



FAVORITE - The contestant that is considered to be more talented or has the better chance to win the contest.

FIELD - 1) All the individual competitors in an event. 2) Odds offered on non listed (outsiders) players or teams collectively called the Field.

FIRING - Betting a lot. A player who is "firing" is wagering large sums.

FIXED GAME - A game in which one or more participants manipulate the final outcome of a game.

FIXED ODDS - Your dividend is fixed at the odds when you placed your bet. No matter how much the odds fluctuate the odds at the time you placed your bet are fixed and written on the ticket. Your dividend for winning is paid at the value stated on your ticket, no matter what happens after you have placed your bet.

FOOTS - Slang term used for Football

FORM - A tabloid used for horse racing

FORUM - Place where gamblers congregate to discuss the upcoming games, talk about their betting strategies or ask betting opinions.

FUTURES - Wager in which you are gambling on the result of a team relative to season wins, standings, playoff finish etc
